Mulank and Bhagyank Calculator: How to Calculate Both by Date of Birth
Your mulank (मूलांक), also spelled moolank and also called the root number or birth number, is the number your birth day reduces to. Your bhagyank (भाग्यांक), the destiny number, is the number your whole date of birth reduces to. Enter your date once below and this tool works out both and shows every step. Further down: what each of the nine numbers means, which birth days produce which mulank, where the traditional sources disagree, and why no mulank is the lucky one.
Built by Lavanya Arora, certified in tarot and Chaldean numerology, Gurugram. This tool is automated and free. It does not replace a session, and nothing you enter is stored.
What this will not tell you. Mulank and bhagyank describe tendencies, not events. They cannot give you a date, name a person, or tell you what will happen. Any calculator that claims otherwise is selling something.
Are mulank and bhagyank the same number?
No. They are calculated from different parts of the same date, and they usually come out different. Your mulank uses only the day of the month you were born. Your bhagyank uses every digit of your date of birth, so the month and year change the answer.
They can land on the same digit by coincidence. That is not a special condition, and it does not mean anything is doubled.

How do you calculate mulank and bhagyank by hand?
Both are digit sums. You add, then keep adding until one digit is left. Here is the full working for someone born on 29 November 1994.
Mulank: use the day only
- Take the day of the month. Here it is 29.
- Add the digits. 2 + 9 = 11
- Still two digits, so add again. 1 + 1 = 2
- The mulank is 2, ruled by the Moon (Chandra).
Bhagyank: use the whole date
- Write the date out in full. 29 / 11 / 1994
- Add every digit. 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 36
- Reduce it. 3 + 6 = 9
- The bhagyank is 9, ruled by Mars (Mangal).
Two things people get wrong here. The first is using the month and year for the mulank, which gives you the bhagyank twice. The second is stopping at the two digit total and treating 36 as the answer. In this system 36 is a step, not the destination.
Mulank 1 to 9: the chart
There are nine mulank numbers. Every birth day from 1 to 31 reduces into that range, so the day you were born fixes which one is yours. The planet beside each is its ruler in ank jyotish, the Indian number system these readings come from.
| Mulank | Born on | Ruled by | In one line |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 10, 19, 28 | Sun (Surya) | Decides quickly and would rather lead than be managed |
| 2 | 2, 11, 20, 29 | Moon (Chandra) | Reads the room before speaking, works best with one other person |
| 3 | 3, 12, 21, 30 | Jupiter (Guru) | Thinks out loud, teaches, needs an audience to think properly |
| 4 | 4, 13, 22, 31 | Rahu | Builds the system, distrusts shortcuts, holds an unusual angle |
| 5 | 5, 14, 23 | Mercury (Budh) | Moves fast, adapts faster, goes flat without variety |
| 6 | 6, 15, 24 | Venus (Shukra) | Holds the people around them together, often at their own cost |
| 7 | 7, 16, 25 | Ketu | Questions the answer, needs solitude, resists being sold to |
| 8 | 8, 17, 26 | Saturn (Shani) | Plays a long game and is asked to pay in effort first |
| 9 | 9, 18, 27 | Mars (Mangal) | Pushes hard, fights other people's corners, burns hot |
What each mulank means
Each number has an easy side and a costly one. The costly side is the more useful half, so it is named here rather than buried.
Mulank 1
Born on the 1st, 10th, 19th or 28th · Ruled by the Sun (Surya)
You decide quickly and would rather lead than be managed. That makes you useful in a crisis and difficult in a committee. The cost is that you often decide before you have finished listening, and you read other people's slowness as obstruction when it is usually just thinking.
Mulank 2
Born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th or 29th · Ruled by the Moon (Chandra)
You read the room before you speak, and you work best alongside one other person rather than in front of a crowd. You pick up what has not been said, which is a real skill and a tiring one. The cost is that you tend to absorb a mood rather than name it, and then carry it home.
Mulank 3
Born on the 3rd, 12th, 21st or 30th · Ruled by Jupiter (Guru)
You think out loud and need an audience to finish a thought properly. Teaching and explaining come easily to you, and so does spreading your attention across more things than you can actually carry. The cost is the half-finished pile.
Mulank 4
Born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st · Ruled by Rahu
You build the system rather than the shortcut, and you hold an angle on things other people have not considered. That combination makes you hard to rush and hard to argue with. The cost is that you will sometimes rebuild something that was already working, because you can see how it ought to have been built.
Mulank 5
Born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd · Ruled by Mercury (Budh)
You move fast and adapt faster, and without variety you go flat. This is the number most often called lucky, which mostly means 5s recover quickly — that looks like luck from outside and feels like churn from inside. The cost is leaving something good because it got boring.
Mulank 6
Born on the 6th, 15th or 24th · Ruled by Venus (Shukra)
You hold the people around you together, often at your own cost. You are the one who notices the practical thing nobody else noticed. The cost is that you take on responsibility nobody asked you to take, and then resent carrying it without ever having said you did not want it.
Mulank 7
Born on the 7th, 16th or 25th · Ruled by Ketu
You question the answer you are given, you need solitude, and you resist being sold to. That makes you a poor audience for a pitch and a good one for a hard truth. The cost is that you can mistake every reassurance for a trick, including the honest ones.
Mulank 8
Born on the 8th, 17th or 26th · Ruled by Saturn (Shani)
You play a long game, and you are usually asked to pay in effort before anything arrives. This number has the worst reputation in Indian numerology, and the reputation is about timing rather than misfortune: things tend to come late rather than not at all. The cost is the years before they come, which is a real cost and not one to wave away.
Mulank 9
Born on the 9th, 18th or 27th · Ruled by Mars (Mangal)
You push hard and fight other people's corners, and you burn hot. You are good in a fight that matters and restless in a stretch of life that does not have one. The cost is the fights that did not matter.
Your bhagyank uses these same nine numbers, but read as an arc rather than a temperament. A mulank 5 is restless this week. A bhagyank 5 keeps being handed a life that changes shape every few years.
Where the traditional sources disagree
The planet attached to each number is not settled, and presenting it as settled flattens a real disagreement. Numbers 4 and 7 are where it shows.
The Indian tradition gives 4 to Rahu and 7 to Ketu — the two lunar nodes, which are calculated points rather than physical bodies. Western Chaldean writing, which reaches most English readers through Cheiro's Book of Numbers, puts Uranus at 4 and Neptune at 7 instead. Older sources such as Sepharial's The Kabala of Numbers order things differently again.
This page uses Rahu and Ketu because that is what ank jyotish uses. If you have seen 4 called Uranus somewhere else, neither table is a mistake — they are different traditions, and nobody arbitrates between them.
Which mulank is the luckiest?
None of them. The question gets asked constantly and it does not survive contact with the system, so it is worth taking apart rather than answering.
Mulank 5 gets called lucky because 5s recover quickly. Mulank 8 gets called unlucky because 8s are asked to wait, and waiting reads as misfortune when you are three years into it. Both descriptions are about how the number feels from outside, not about what happens.
What a mulank does not do is set an outcome. It describes a tendency you are working with, and a tendency can be played well or badly. If a reading tells you your number has doomed something and then offers to fix it, you are being sold a remedy for a problem this system does not actually describe.
What is ank jyotish?
Ank jyotish (अंक ज्योतिष) is the Indian number system both of these readings come from. It overlaps with Western numerology without being the same thing: it sits alongside Vedic astrology, takes its rulers from the same nine grahas, and treats the date of birth as the primary input rather than the name.
That is why your mulank's ruler is a planet rather than an archetype, and why Rahu and Ketu turn up at 4 and 7 where a Western table would put Uranus and Neptune. It is also why birth time plays no part here. A kundli needs the time; ank jyotish works from the date alone.
Does your bhagyank matter more than your mulank?
Most Indian practitioners weight the bhagyank higher, because it is built from the whole date rather than one part of it. The mulank is the more visible of the two. It is closer to how you behave and how people describe you.
The more useful question is what they do when they disagree. A mulank 1 with a bhagyank 2 is someone who acts decisively and then keeps ending up in situations that require patience. That friction is the reading. Two numbers that agree tell you less, not more.
Is this calculator Chaldean or Pythagorean?
Chaldean. For mulank and bhagyank the distinction does not change the arithmetic, though, and it is worth being straight about why. Both numbers come from digits that are already numbers. No letters are converted, so the letter table that actually separates the two systems never gets used here.
Where the two systems genuinely part is name numbers. Chaldean assigns different values to letters and never gives any letter a 9. If you want that calculation, use the lucky name numerology calculator, which runs the Chaldean table. Most English-language writing on the Chaldean system traces back to Cheiro’s Book of Numbers, which is where the letter values and the compound-number readings are set out.
One Chaldean habit does show up here. Chaldean reads the two digit total on the way down, not only the single digit at the end. If your working passes through 11, 13, 22 or another number the tradition treats as significant, the result panel says so and links you to it. Most calculators throw that step away.
So there is nothing to toggle on this page. Where the choice does change the answer is any calculation that converts letters, which is why the free numerology calculator and the name tools are the place that question actually matters.
What about your namank, the name number?
Mulank and bhagyank come from your date of birth. The third number in the set, the namank, comes from your name, which means it is the only one of the three you can change. It is calculated from the Chaldean letter table rather than from digits.
That is a different tool with a different input, so it lives on its own page: lucky name numerology calculator. If you are checking a name for a business or a baby, start with the business name calculator or the baby name calculator instead.
Common questions
Is mulank and bhagyank the same?
No. Mulank comes from the day of birth only, bhagyank from the full date of birth. They can land on the same digit by chance, but that is coincidence, not a rule.
Can your mulank be 11 or 22?
Not as a final answer. Mulank runs 1 to 9, so a birth day of 29 reduces through 11 and lands on 2. The 11 is real and it is worth reading, which is why this calculator shows it. It is a step in the working, not the mulank itself.
Do you need your birth time?
No. Mulank and bhagyank use the date only. Birth time matters for a kundli, the Vedic birth chart, but it plays no part in either of these two numbers. If you know the date, you have everything you need.
Is bhagyank the same as the life path number?
Yes, in practice. Bhagyank is the Indian name for it and life path number is the Western name for it, and both are the digit sum of the full date of birth. The one difference you will meet is that some Western systems stop at 11, 22 or 33 and call them master numbers. Ank jyotish reduces all the way to a single digit.
Is moolank the same as mulank?
Yes. Mulank, moolank and मूलांक are the same word transliterated differently, and all of them mean the root number taken from your birth day. In English you will also see it called the root number, the birth number and the psychic number. They all point at the same digit.
How many mulank numbers are there?
Nine. Mulank runs 1 to 9, because every birth day from the 1st to the 31st reduces into that range. There is no mulank 0, and 11, 22 and 33 are steps in the working rather than final answers.
Does your mulank change if you change your name?
No. Your date of birth does not move, so neither number moves. A name change affects the namank only. This is the single most common mix-up between the three numbers.
What if you were born on the 31st?
Same method. 31 gives 3 + 1 = 4, so the mulank is 4. Days above 9 always reduce, and days 1 to 9 are already single digits and stay as they are.
What a calculator can and cannot do
This page gives you two numbers and the working behind them, free, with nothing to sign up for. That is genuinely useful and it is also the whole of what an automated tool can do. It reads a date. It does not know what you are deciding.
A session is the other half. It starts from your actual question, weighs the numbers against each other rather than listing them, and says plainly where the reading runs out. If you want that, the numerology page has the formats and prices.
