Mulank and Bhagyank Calculator

Your mulank is the number your birth day reduces to. Your bhagyank is the number your whole date of birth reduces to. Enter your date once below and this tool works out both, and shows every step. Use it as a mulank calculator, a bhagyank calculator, or both at once — it always returns both numbers.

What this will not tell you. Mulank and bhagyank describe tendencies, not events. They cannot give you a date, name a person, or tell you what will happen. Any calculator that claims otherwise is selling something.

Enter your date of birth

Are mulank and bhagyank the same number?

No. They are calculated from different parts of the same date, and they usually come out different. Your mulank uses only the day of the month you were born. Your bhagyank uses every digit of your date of birth, so the month and year change the answer.

They can land on the same digit by coincidence. That is not a special condition, and it does not mean anything is doubled.

How do you calculate mulank and bhagyank by hand?

Both are digit sums. You add, then keep adding until one digit is left. Here is the full working for someone born on 29 November 1994.

Mulank: use the day only

  • Take the day of the month. Here it is 29.
  • Add the digits. 2 + 9 = 11
  • Still two digits, so add again. 1 + 1 = 2
  • The mulank is 2, ruled by the Moon (Chandra).

Bhagyank: use the whole date

  • Write the date out in full. 29 / 11 / 1994
  • Add every digit. 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 4 = 36
  • Reduce it. 3 + 6 = 9
  • The bhagyank is 9, ruled by Mars (Mangal).

Two things people get wrong here. The first is using the month and year for the mulank, which gives you the bhagyank twice. The second is stopping at the two digit total and treating 36 as the answer. In this system 36 is a step, not the destination.

What do the nine mulank numbers mean?

One line each, with the planet that rules the number in ank jyotish, the Indian number system these two readings come from. The full profile for each number is a separate page.

MulankRuled byIn one line
1Sun (Surya)Decides quickly and would rather lead than be managed. Read 1
2Moon (Chandra)Reads the room before speaking, and works best with one other person. Read 2
3Jupiter (Guru)Thinks out loud, teaches, needs an audience to think properly. Read 3
4RahuBuilds the system, distrusts shortcuts, holds an unusual angle. Read 4
5Mercury (Budh)Moves fast, adapts faster, goes flat without variety. Read 5
6Venus (Shukra)Holds the people around them together, often at their own cost. Read 6
7KetuQuestions the answer, needs solitude, resists being sold to. Read 7
8Saturn (Shani)Plays a long game and is asked to pay in effort first. Read 8
9Mars (Mangal)Pushes hard, fights other people's corners, burns hot. Read 9

To put two of them in plain prose: mulank 1, ruled by the Sun, decides quickly and would rather lead than be managed, while mulank 9, ruled by Mars, pushes hard and fights other people’s corners. Your bhagyank uses the same nine numbers, but read as an arc rather than a temperament. A mulank 5 is restless this week. A bhagyank 5 keeps being handed a life that changes shape every few years.

Does your bhagyank matter more than your mulank?

Most Indian practitioners weight the bhagyank higher, because it is built from the whole date rather than one part of it. The mulank is the more visible of the two. It is closer to how you behave and how people describe you.

The more useful question is what they do when they disagree. A mulank 1 with a bhagyank 2 is someone who acts decisively and then keeps ending up in situations that require patience. That friction is the reading. Two numbers that agree tell you less, not more.

Is this calculator Chaldean or Pythagorean?

Chaldean, like everything else on this site. For mulank and bhagyank the distinction does not change the arithmetic, and it is worth being straight about why. Both numbers come from digits that are already numbers. No letters are converted, so the letter table that separates the two systems never gets used.

Where the two systems genuinely part is name numbers. Chaldean assigns different values to letters and never gives any letter a 9. If you want that calculation, use the lucky name numerology calculator, which runs the Chaldean table. Most English-language writing on the Chaldean system traces back to Cheiro’s Book of Numbers, which is where the letter values and the compound-number readings are set out.

One Chaldean habit does show up here. Chaldean reads the two digit total on the way down, not only the single digit at the end. If your working passes through 11, 13, 22 or another number the tradition treats as significant, the result panel says so and links you to it. Most calculators throw that step away.

What about your namank, the name number?

Mulank and bhagyank come from your date of birth. The third number in the set, the namank, comes from your name, which means it is the only one of the three you can change. It is calculated from the Chaldean letter table rather than from digits.

That is a different tool with a different input, so it lives on its own page: lucky name numerology calculator. If you are checking a name for a business or a baby, start with the business name calculator or the baby name calculator instead.

Common questions

Is mulank and bhagyank the same?

No. Mulank comes from the day of birth only, bhagyank from the full date of birth. They can land on the same digit by chance, but that is coincidence, not a rule.

Can your mulank be 11 or 22?

Not as a final answer. Mulank runs 1 to 9, so a birth day of 29 reduces through 11 and lands on 2. The 11 is real and it is worth reading, which is why this calculator shows it. It is a step in the working, not the mulank itself.

Do you need your birth time?

No. Mulank and bhagyank use the date only. Birth time matters for a kundli, the Vedic birth chart, but it plays no part in either of these two numbers. If you know the date, you have everything you need.

Is bhagyank the same as the life path number?

Yes, in practice. Bhagyank is the Indian name for it and life path number is the Western name for it, and both are the digit sum of the full date of birth. The one difference you will meet is that some Western systems stop at 11, 22 or 33 and call them master numbers. Ank jyotish reduces all the way to a single digit.

Which mulank is the luckiest?

None of them. That framing gets asked constantly and it does not survive contact with the system. Every number carries an easy side and a costly one, and the 8 that people are warned about is the same 8 that builds things that last. The full mulank guide works through each number's trade-off.

Does your mulank change if you change your name?

No. Your date of birth does not move, so neither number moves. A name change affects the namank only. This is the single most common mix-up between the three numbers.

What if you were born on the 31st?

Same method. 31 gives 3 + 1 = 4, so the mulank is 4. Days above 9 always reduce, and days 1 to 9 are already single digits and stay as they are.

What a calculator can and cannot do

This page gives you two numbers and the working behind them, free, with nothing to sign up for. That is genuinely useful and it is also the whole of what an automated tool can do. It reads a date. It does not know what you are deciding.

A session is the other half. It starts from your actual question, weighs the numbers against each other rather than listing them, and says plainly where the reading runs out. If you want that, the numerology page has the formats and prices.
