The short answer. Temperance is card XIV, linked to Sagittarius, with fire as its element. Upright it describes patient blending: two demands held in proportion, neither of them dropped. Reversed it describes the loss of that middle setting, which shows up as too much at one end or nothing at all at the other. It describes a ratio, not a result.
What Temperance cannot tell you
I want to name the limit first, because this card gets used to avoid a decision rather than to make one.
Temperance does not tell you the proportion. It says two things belong in the mix. It does not say sixty-forty, and it does not say which one gets the sixty.
That sounds like a small gap. It is actually the whole practical question, and the card leaves it with you on purpose.
It also will not tell you whether both things deserve to be in the mix at all. Some situations are not a balance problem. Some are a leaving problem wearing a balance problem’s clothes.
Most write-ups of the Temperance tarot card meaning stop at the word balance. Balance is not a reading. It is a mood, and you can nod at it without changing anything on Monday.
What I look for instead is the ratio the person is actually running. Not the one they describe. The one their calendar and their money show.
So read Temperance as a question about proportion. Whether the situation deserves your patience stays with you.
What does Temperance mean?
An angel stands at the edge of a pool, pouring water between two cups. One foot is in the water. The other is on the bank.
Nothing in the picture is hurrying. That is the first thing to notice, because every other detail repeats it.
The two cups are held almost level, mouth to mouth. Neither is tipped far enough to pour properly, and the water moves between them without either one emptying.
I read that as the honest part of the image. This is a circuit, not a transfer. Nothing is being spent.
On the robe there is a triangle inside a square. A shape with three sides held inside one with four: spirit kept inside something structured enough to carry it.
The sun disc sits on the forehead rather than in a hand. The authority here is worn, not brandished, which is the same note Strength sounds one octave lower.
Behind the figure a path runs off toward low hills with a sun sitting on them. The card points somewhere. It does not arrive anywhere, and it does not pretend to.
The detail most write-ups skip
Look at the feet. One is submerged to the ankle. The other is planted on dry ground.
Temperance is the only figure in the Major Arcana standing in two elements at once. Not choosing between them. Standing in both, at the same time, taking the weight.
That is why I distrust the word balance here. Balance sounds like poise. This is a stance, and stances are tiring.
The water is the part of a situation you cannot see into. The bank is the part you can check.
Keeping a foot in each is harder than committing to either.

Both are the same card because both are a refusal to hold a ratio. One floors it, the other removes the pedal.

At the excess end, everything is happening very fast and being called certainty. At the withheld end, somebody is rationing warmth to stay safe.

Reversed, spending swings. A tight month, then a month that undoes it, then a promise about next quarter.

Is Temperance a yes or no card?
Upright, Temperance is a yes. It is a yes with a condition attached: yes, at this pace, in this proportion.
Reversed it reads as a no. Not a no to the thing itself, usually. A no to the all-or-nothing way it is currently being attempted.
That distinction is the useful part. A no about method leaves you something to change, which a flat no does not.

Put plainly: Strength asks how much force, the Star asks how long, Temperance asks what proportion. Mixing them up changes the advice completely.

One card sets the method. The cards beside it tell you what is being mixed.
With Cups nearby, the two things are usually people, or a person and your own peace. With Pentacles, it is almost always time against money.
Next to Death, which sits immediately before it in the sequence, Temperance reads as the long recovery after an ending. That order is not decorative. The deck puts the blending after the loss, never before it.
With Swords, check whether the balancing act is real or whether you are just arguing both sides in your head and calling it fairness.
