And it does not judge you. Most write-ups of the Devil tarot card meaning read like an accusation. I think that is both unkind and inaccurate, because it misses the only interesting question.
The interesting question is what the arrangement is paying you. Nothing holds anybody for years without returning something. Comfort, identity, income, an excuse, the relief of not deciding.
Name the payment and the card becomes usable. Skip it and you get a fortnight of willpower followed by the same position.
What does the Devil mean?
A horned figure sits on a block. Two people stand chained below it, one either side.
That is the frightening version, and it is the version most readings stop at. The details underneath say something much less dramatic.
Look at the collars. Each one is wider than the neck it sits on. They rest on the shoulders rather than gripping.
Then follow the chains. They hang slack, and they run to a ring on the block rather than to the Devil’s hands. Nothing in the picture is pulling.
The raised hand is open and empty. It is a gesture, not a grip. The other hand holds a torch pointed at the ground, lighting nothing anyone is looking at.
Even the block is only half a cube. The thing they are chained to has not been finished.
Above it all sits an inverted pentagram: a star with the point that should lead turned underneath. Appetite is steering. Nothing worse than that is being claimed.
The detail most write-ups skip
Put this card next to the Lovers and the same two people are standing there.
In the Lovers, she stands beside a tree with fruit on it and he stands beside a tree of flames. An angel is above them, and they are unbound.
In the Devil, those two trees have become their tails. Hers ends in fruit. His ends in flame. What used to stand beside them is now attached to them.
That is the whole card in one image, and I have not seen a clearer definition of attachment anywhere. Nothing new arrived. What was once a thing you stood near became a thing you carry.
It also explains why the card is not an accusation. Neither figure went looking for a chain. They stayed close to something they liked until the distance closed.
Waite’s 1911 Pictorial Key to the Tarot is where these descriptions come from, and the card’s documented history fills in the rest.

Is the Devil a yes or no card?
Upright, the Devil is a no. Not because the thing is forbidden, but because the terms are worse than they look from inside.
Reversed it reads as a yes. The hold is loosening, and a decision made now is more likely to be yours than the arrangement’s.
This is one of the few cards where I would take the reversal as the better draw. Seeing the mechanism beats not seeing it.

These three sit next to each other in the deck, and read in order they make one sentence about excess.
