It also arrives constantly for questions that have nothing to do with love. A job against another job. A city. Which version of yourself you are going to keep.
Both readings can be true in the same spread, which is part of why this card turns up as often as it does.
Most write-ups of the Lovers tarot card meaning treat it as the romance card and stop. That reading is not wrong so much as small, and it costs you the useful half.
The question I ask instead is plain. If you had to defend this choice to somebody who liked you but disagreed, what would you say?
People who can answer that are usually fine. People who cannot have generally not made a choice yet, whatever the calendar says.
What does the Lovers mean?
A man and a woman stand apart on open ground. An angel rises above them with both arms open, and a mountain sits in the gap between the two figures.
Nothing on this card is touching. That is worth noticing early, because the popular reading assumes otherwise.
Behind her stands a tree with fruit on it and a serpent coiled around the trunk. Knowledge, and the price attached to it.
Behind him stands a tree of flames, twelve of them. Desire, drawn as something that burns rather than something that grows.
The angel above has both arms open and is choosing nothing. Present, and not intervening, which is a precise piece of drawing.
The mountain between them is small and central, sitting directly in the gap. Whatever is between these two is not large, and it is not nothing.
The detail most write-ups skip
Look at where the two of them are looking.
Her face is tilted up, past him, to the angel. His face is turned left, toward her. The two lines of sight never meet.
For a card filed under romance, that is a strange thing to draw. Two people gazing at each other would have been the obvious choice and it is not what is on the card.
I read it as the most honest thing in the picture. Her attention is on the thing above the decision. His attention is on the person.
Two different orientations, held at the same time, and the card treats that as workable rather than as a problem to be fixed.
That is a far more useful picture of a partnership than mutual gazing. Most of the good ones I have seen involve two people facing slightly different directions and knowing it.
