The Strength tarot card meaning is straightforward: you get the result through patience rather than force. Upright, it describes self-mastery that is already working. Reversed, it describes one of two failures, either forcing the thing or doubting you have anything to bring to it.
The short answer. Strength is card VIII in most modern decks and XI in older ones. Upright, it marks control that does not need to announce itself, and patience that is actually getting somewhere. Reversed, it splits two ways: bulldozing at one end, self-doubt at the other. It describes a method, not an outcome.

ToggleWhat Strength cannot tell you
I want to name the limit before anything else, because this is the card people most often use to justify a decision they have already made.
Strength does not tell you whether the thing you are enduring is worth enduring. It describes how you are handling it. It does not rule on whether you should be.
Those are two different questions. The card answers the first one and stays quiet on the second, and I would not let anyone blur them together for you.
This matters because patience and avoidance look identical from the outside. Both involve waiting. Both look calm. Only one of them is going somewhere.
Most write-ups of the Strength tarot card meaning stop at the words inner strength, and I think that is where they go wrong. Inner strength is a compliment. It is not a reading.
What I look for instead is the shape of the pressure. Who is applying it, how long it has been applied, and whether the person in front of me has any say over when it ends.
This card usually turns up when somebody feels challenged, disrespected or stuck, and has no better option available right now. The question underneath what they describe is almost always the same one. How do I get through this without losing myself? Strength answers that, and only that. It teaches you to handle the situation with composure and resilience.
So read the card as a description of your method, and keep the question of whether the situation deserves that method firmly in your own hands.
What does the Strength card mean?

A woman stands with her hands on a lion’s jaws. She is not straining. Her head is tilted, her expression is calm, and the lion is letting her do it.
That is the whole card. Every detail underneath it says the same thing in a different way.

The lemniscate above her head is the infinity symbol, and the Magician wears the same one. Both cards are about directing power rather than owning it.
Her robe is plain white with no armour on it. Whatever she is doing here, she is not defended against it.
The garland of roses runs from her waist to the lion’s neck. I read that as the honest part of the image. A leash made of flowers is still a leash, and the card does not pretend otherwise.
The lion is appetite and temper. It is not an enemy, which is why nothing in the picture looks like a fight.
Why the number changes between decks

If you own two decks and they give this card different numbers, neither one is misprinted.
In the older Marseille order, Justice is eighth and Strength is eleventh. A. E. Waite swapped them for the 1909 deck so the sequence lined up with Leo, and almost every modern deck follows Waite.
Waite’s own 1911 Pictorial Key to the Tarot is where these descriptions come from, and the card’s documented history fills in the rest.
Strength upright: what it asks of you
Upright, the card asks one question. Are you being patient, or are you avoiding something and calling it patience?
I ask it in that order deliberately. Most people answer honestly when the question is put plainly, and they rarely answer it at all when it is not.
One thing worth knowing about the Strength tarot card meaning is how little it shifts between areas of life. Most cards read quite differently in love and at work. This one barely moves.
The situation changes and the instruction does not. Hold your position, do not escalate, and give it longer than feels reasonable. I find that consistency useful, because it means you can trust the card even when the context is unfamiliar.
In love
Upright, Strength favours the slow conversation over the decisive one.
Inside a relationship it usually points at a difficulty you are already handling well. Not solved, handled. The card is telling you the approach is right and the timeline is longer than you would like.
If you are single, I read it as the pattern where you stop auditioning and let someone see the unpolished version. That is harder than it sounds, and it works more often than the polished one.
The free daily love tarot reading will pull a card on one question if you want a prompt today. It is automated and free, and a prompt is all it is.
This week: say the difficult thing once, calmly, without building a case first.
In career
Upright, this is the card of the person who is being underestimated and is handling it well.
It comes up around a difficult colleague, a manager who does not see the work, or a role you have outgrown but have not left. In each case the card backs restraint over confrontation.
I would add one thing, because restraint gets oversold. Restraint works when it is a strategy. It stops working when it is just a habit of never asking.
The free daily career tarot reading gives you one card on one question if today is the day you look at it.
This week: ask for one specific thing you have been waiting to be offered.
In money
Upright, Strength points to a slow financial position that is genuinely improving.
Debt coming down, savings building, a business finding its footing. Nothing dramatic. The card reads that as a success rather than a holding pattern, and I think it is right to.
A card is not financial advice. Before you commit money to anything, speak to a qualified financial adviser who can look at your actual position.
This week: write down the number you are actually working toward, with a date next to it.
In health
Upright, this favours consistency over intensity. The gentle plan you will still be doing in March beats the punishing one you abandon in February.
It also turns up around recovery, where the honest reading is that it is taking as long as it takes.
A reading is not medical advice and is not a substitute for a doctor. If something is wrong, get it checked by a qualified professional. The free wellness tarot reading is free and automated if you want a prompt alongside that.
This week: pick the version of the habit you could do on a bad day, and do that one.
As someone’s feelings
When Strength describes how somebody feels about you, it reads as steady and largely unspoken.
Real regard, held quietly, often by someone who shows it through what they do rather than what they say. I would not read the quiet as indifference here.
This week: notice what they do when it costs them something, and weigh that above what they say.
What does Strength reversed mean?
Reversed, the card splits into two opposite pictures, and telling them apart is most of the work.
The first is forcing it. Pushing harder at something that needed patience, winning the argument and losing the relationship, treating temper as decisiveness.
The second is the collapse of nerve. Deciding in advance that you do not have what the situation needs, and folding before anyone asks you to.
Reversed, you are not handling the situation in a healthy way. It shows up in one of two forms. Either you are forcing yourself to keep going while exhausted, or you are folding, which looks like avoiding, staying silent, or giving up. The surrounding cards and the context tell you which one you are in.
Both are the same card because both are a failure of self-management. One overshoots and the other never starts.
The Strength tarot card meaning in reverse is not weakness, which is how it usually gets translated. It is misapplied force, and force applied to yourself counts.
In love, reversed
At the forcing end, patience has curdled into pressure. You are managing the person rather than talking to them, and they can feel it even if neither of you names it.
At the folding end, you have quietly appointed yourself the one who always gives way. That is not generosity, and it does not hold.
If an ex is occupying the thinking, that is worth naming rather than working around. The relationship tarot posts cover that ground properly.
This week: ask for one thing directly, in plain words, without softening it.
In career, reversed
Reversed, I associate this with the person who has been patient for two years about something that should have taken two months.
It also describes the opposite, the sharp email sent at eleven at night. Both come from the same place, which is a situation that has gone on too long without being addressed.
This week: put a date on the conversation you keep postponing, and tell one person the date.
In money, reversed
Reversed, this points at spending that is doing an emotional job rather than a financial one.
It can equally describe the opposite, a grip so tight that nothing is enjoyed and nothing is invested. Both are the same loss of control wearing different clothes.
Speak to a qualified adviser before anything significant moves, particularly if the decision feels urgent.
This week: track every spend for seven days without changing any of them.
In health, reversed
Reversed, I read this as the start-and-abandon cycle, or as willpower being asked to do a job that structure should be doing.
If something has been waiting for an appointment, book the appointment. That sentence is the whole of my reading here.
This week: remove one obstacle rather than adding one more rule.
As someone’s feelings, reversed
Interest that is real but poorly regulated. Warm one week, absent the next, with the gap unexplained.
I would read that as immaturity far more often than as strategy, and the practical response is the same either way. Watch what repeats.
This week: note what actually happens over ten days, without narrating it in your head.
Is Strength a yes or no card?
Upright, Strength is a yes. It is a yes about method rather than luck, which means the answer holds only if you are willing to do it the slow way.
Reversed it reads as a no, or more precisely, not like this. The instinct may be sound while the handling is not.
I would treat that distinction as the useful part. A no about method is a much better answer than a flat no, because you can act on it.
For a single yes-or-no question you can pull one now with the free yes/no tarot reading, which is free and automated. What it cannot do is ask you the follow-up question, and with this card the follow-up is usually the one that matters.
How Strength differs from the Emperor and the Chariot

These three are all power cards, and separating them makes each one much easier to read.
The Emperor holds authority. The power sits in the position, and people follow because of what he is.
The Chariot holds direction. Two forces pull in opposite directions and it keeps one heading anyway.
Strength holds its own temper. The power is in not needing to use it, which is why the lion stays without being fought.
Put plainly: the Emperor commands, the Chariot steers, Strength does not flinch.
If you are learning the deck, I would spend time on this trio before almost any other. Mixing them up is the single most common reading error I see in beginners, and it changes the advice completely.
Draw the Emperor when the real issue is your own temper and you will go looking for authority you do not need. Draw Strength when the issue is genuinely a lack of direction and you will sit patiently through something that wanted a decision.
Reading Strength with the cards around it
One card is a fragment. The cards beside it finish the sentence.
With Cups nearby, I take the patience as emotional, usually a relationship being carried through a difficult stretch. With Pentacles, it is a slow build at work or with money.
Next to the Tower, I would look hard at whether the endurance has quietly become avoidance.
With Swords, the pressure is usually coming from something being said rather than something being done, and the patience is being asked of your reaction rather than your circumstances.
Next to the Devil, the lion stops being appetite and starts being compulsion, and that is a different conversation. Next to the Fool, the patience is being asked for at the very start of something.

- Lemniscate: directed power, the same symbol the Magician wears

- Lion: appetite and temper, not an enemy
- Her posture: calm, unhurried, not straining
What should you do this week if you drew Strength?
Answer one question honestly and the rest of the card resolves itself.
Are you being patient, or are you avoiding a conversation and calling it patience?
If it is genuine patience, name what you are waiting for and how you will know it has arrived. Patience without a marker turns into drift, usually without anyone noticing.
If it is avoidance, the card is not asking you to endure better. It is asking you to say the thing. Pick the smallest true sentence and say it this week.
On timing, I will be blunt, because you will find sites that will give you a month. Timing is the weakest thing tarot does, and I would rather say so than invent a date for you.
Common questions about Strength
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Strength a good card to draw?
It is a steady card rather than a lucky one. Upright it says the approach you are already taking is the one that works, and that it will take longer than you want. Reversed it says the approach is off, either because you are forcing it or because you have talked yourself out of trying.
Why is Strength number 8 in some decks and 11 in others?
Because Waite moved it. In the older Marseille order Justice is eighth and Strength eleventh. The 1909 Rider-Waite deck swapped them so the sequence lined up with Leo. If your two decks disagree, neither is misprinted.
What does Strength reversed mean in love?
One of two opposite things. Either patience has curdled into pressure, and you are managing someone rather than talking to them. Or you have decided you are the one who always gives way, and stopped asking for anything. Work out which one is yours before you act on it.
Does Strength mean I should keep waiting?
No card can answer that, and I would be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Strength describes how you are handling the situation. It does not rule on whether the situation deserves it. Those are two different questions and only you have the second one.
Which zodiac sign is Strength linked to?
Leo, and its element is fire. That is the reasoning behind the renumbering: at eighth, the card sits where Leo falls in the zodiacal sequence.
