The short answer. Death is card XIII, ruled by Scorpio. Upright it marks a door that closes and stays closed, usually a job, a relationship, a city or a version of yourself. Reversed it marks resistance to an ending that has already begun. It describes a change in progress, not a prediction about anybody’s life.
What Death cannot tell you
I want to deal with the obvious fear first, because it is the reason most people arrive at this page.

What I look for is the gap between when something ended and when the person noticed. That gap is where most of the difficulty in a reading sits, and it is usually longer than anyone expects.
What people describe when this card turns up is almost always a dilemma. They are standing in front of a change they do not want to face. Sometimes it is a career, sometimes money, sometimes how they live, sometimes a whole chapter of life closing. What they are afraid of is rarely the change itself. It is that it arrived before they were ready, and that they cannot see what sits on the other side. The fear is the uncertainty, not the ending.

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse across a field. People are gathered in front of it. Nobody is running.

Most write-ups stop at the skeleton. The four figures in front of it are where the card actually says something.
A king lies fallen with his crown already off. Rank buys nothing here, and he is the only one who was given no choice.
A bishop stands upright with his hands together. He has a framework for this, which is not the same thing as being spared.
A maiden kneels beside him, turned away. That is the most human posture on the card and the one I recognise most often.
And a child kneels at the front holding flowers, looking straight at it. No pleading, nothing hidden, flowers already in hand.
The card is not ranking them. It is showing you four postures and asking, without much sympathy, which one is yours.

Upright, the card asks one question, and it is not a gentle one. What are you still holding that has already ended?
I put it that way deliberately. Most people know the answer before they finish reading the sentence, and the knowing is the useful part.
Something worth understanding about the Death tarot card meaning is how little it changes across areas of life. Love, work, money, health: the instruction is the same one every time.
Stop maintaining the finished thing. That is it. I find the consistency genuinely useful, because it means you do not need to know which part of your life the card is pointing at to act on it.
In love
Upright, Death points at a relationship that has already changed shape, whether or not anyone has said so out loud.
Sometimes that means it is over. Often it means the version you had is over, and something else is available if both of you are honest about the change.
I would not read this as instruction to leave. The card marks an ending, and endings inside a relationship are as common as endings of one.

That is painful and it is also clean. I would rather hand someone a closed door than a maybe they will spend a year interpreting.

Reversed, the ending has not gone away. It has been postponed, and postponement is doing the damage now.
This is the resignation not sent, the relationship narrated to friends for two years, the flat not left. The card is unusually direct about it.
Reversed Death is the drawn-out version of the same event, and the drawn-out version almost always costs more than the clean one would have.

I would read that as avoidance rather than cruelty, and the practical answer is the same either way. Ask directly, once.

Is Death a yes or no card?
Upright, Death is a yes, and it is a yes with no negotiation attached. The thing is happening. The question was never really whether.
Reversed it reads as a no, though a specific kind. Not no because it will not happen, but no because you are the one currently preventing it from completing.
I find that distinction does more work than a flat no ever could. A no you are producing yourself is a no you can withdraw.

These three cover overlapping ground and separating them makes each one much easier to read.

The Chariot and the Tower both involve force, but the Tower is collapse rather than closure. It breaks something you built, suddenly and loudly.
Temperance is card XIV, immediately after Death, and it is the recombination. Slow, undramatic, and easy to miss while it is happening.
Put plainly: the Tower demolishes, Death closes, Temperance rebuilds. The deck puts them in that order for a reason.
If you are learning the deck, I would separate these three early. Reading a Tower as a Death makes you brace for collapse when a door is simply closing, and reading a Death as a Tower makes you look for someone to blame.
Reading Death with the cards around it
One card is a fragment. The cards beside it finish the sentence.
With Cups nearby, the ending is emotional and usually a relationship. With Pentacles, it is material, and I would look at work or money before anything else.
Next to the Fool, the ending is clearing space for a genuine beginning, and the two cards read as one movement rather than two events.
Next to Strength, I would ask whether the patience is helping or whether it has become the thing keeping the ending open.
