The Hermit tarot card meaning is solitude you chose, with a purpose attached to it. Upright, stepping back is producing something. Reversed, the stepping back has become hiding and has stopped producing anything at all.
The short answer. The Hermit is card IX, ruled by Virgo. Upright it marks a deliberate withdrawal to think, with a defined end and something to bring back. Reversed it marks isolation that outlived its usefulness, or advice being refused on principle. It describes a choice, not a personality.

ToggleWhat the Hermit cannot tell you
I want to name the limit first, because this card is regularly used to make a difficult situation sound like a spiritual one.
The Hermit does not tell you that being alone is good for you. It describes a withdrawal you have already chosen and says nothing about whether the choice was wise.
It also will not tell you what you are going to find. The card is about the going, not the answer, and I would be careful with any reading that promises the answer is waiting up there.
The distinction that matters is between solitude with a question in it and solitude without one. The first is this card upright. The second is loneliness with better branding.
Most descriptions of the Hermit tarot card meaning reach for words like retreat and withdrawal, which suggest going away and going down. The picture shows the opposite. He is standing on a summit, and he got there by climbing.
That single detail changes the reading more than anything else on the card. This is not somebody hiding from the world. It is somebody who went to the highest point available and is now holding a light where other people can see it.
If the solitude you are in has no question in it and no end to it, the card is not endorsing your situation. It is describing something you have not started yet.
What does the Hermit mean?

An old man in a grey cloak stands on snow, head bowed, holding a lantern out in front of him. There is nothing else in the picture.
The emptiness is deliberate. Everything the card wants to say is carried by four details.

The lantern is held away from his body, not close to it. He is not reading by it and he is not warming himself. He is showing it to whoever is behind him.
His head is bowed and his eyes are down. Whatever he came up here to find, he is not scanning the horizon for it.
He carries a staff, and it is the same staff the Fool and the Magician carry. He did not renounce anything to come up here. He brought his tools with him.
And there is snow under his feet with nothing above him. He is at the top.
There is a star inside the lamp, not a flame

Look closely at the lantern and the light source is a six-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon. Not a candle, not fire.
I think that is the most under-discussed detail on the card. A flame would make this about comfort in the dark, something small you protect with your hands.
A star makes it something else entirely. Fixed, geometric, not generated by him and not capable of going out. Whatever he is carrying, he did not make it and he cannot use it up.
Waite’s 1911 Pictorial Key to the Tarot is where these descriptions originate, and the card’s documented history fills in the rest.
The Hermit upright: what it asks of you
Upright, the card asks one question. Are you going somewhere to think, or going somewhere to avoid being asked things?
Both look like solitude from the outside. Only one of them ends with you coming back down with something.
What makes the Hermit tarot card meaning useful is that it puts a condition on the withdrawal. Time alone is not the achievement. Time alone with a specific question is.
In love
Upright, this is a deliberate stretch of not dating, or a period inside a relationship where you need to work something out on your own.
The card supports that and attaches the usual condition. The time apart has to be producing clarity rather than simply postponing a conversation.
I read it as the card of the person who has finally stopped asking friends what they think. That is usually a good sign, and occasionally it is the problem.
The free daily love tarot reading will pull a card on one question if you want a prompt today. It is automated and free, and a prompt is all it is.
This week: write down what you actually want, before asking anyone else what they would do.
In career
Upright, this is the specialist. The person going deep on one thing rather than wide across many.
It also turns up around a deliberate professional quiet spell, where somebody stops chasing visibility and starts building competence instead.
There is a version of this card that is about teaching, and I would not overlook it. The lamp is held out. If you have learned something, this card thinks you should be showing it to someone.
The free daily career tarot reading gives you one card on one question if today is the day you look at it.
This week: block two hours for the thing that needs concentration, and put it in the calendar.
In money
Upright, the Hermit favours understanding your position over changing it.
It is the card of finally reading the terms, working out where the money actually goes, and making no decisions until you do. Unglamorous and almost always correct.
A card is not financial advice. Before you act on anything you find, speak to a qualified financial adviser who can look at your actual position.
This week: spend forty minutes working out exactly where last month went.
In health
Upright, this reads as paying attention rather than pushing. Noticing patterns, tracking something honestly, listening to what your body has been signalling.
It also favours seeking one qualified opinion over collecting many casual ones.
A reading is not medical advice and is not a substitute for a doctor. If something is worrying you, get it checked by a qualified professional. The free wellness tarot reading is free and automated if you want a prompt alongside that.
This week: track one thing honestly for seven days without trying to fix it.
As someone’s feelings
When the Hermit describes how somebody feels, it reads as thinking carefully and saying very little.
Real consideration, held privately. I would not read the silence as disinterest here, though I would not read it as certainty either.
This week: give it space rather than prompting, and see what they bring you.
What does the Hermit reversed mean?
Reversed, the withdrawal has stopped working. What began as thinking has become hiding, and the difference is whether anything is still being produced.
The second version is refusing counsel. Being the only person you will listen to, which feels like independence and is usually fear wearing a better coat.
The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask when you last changed your mind about something because of what somebody else said. If you cannot remember, it is the second.
The Hermit tarot card meaning in reverse is not a demand that you socialise more. It is a question about whether the solitude is still doing its job.
In love, reversed
Withdrawal that has become the default. Turning down invitations for so long that they stopped arriving, and calling that a preference.
It also covers the person inside a relationship who has quietly moved out emotionally while staying physically present.
If an ex is occupying the thinking here, the relationship tarot posts cover that ground properly.
This week: accept one invitation you would normally decline.
In career, reversed
The specialist who has specialised into a corner. Deep knowledge nobody else can access, and no interest in explaining it.
It also describes refusing help on a project that clearly needs it, usually because asking would mean admitting the timeline slipped.
This week: ask one person for input on the thing you have been doing alone.
In money, reversed
Avoiding the numbers rather than examining them. The Hermit reversed is the unopened statement, and I find that image holds up almost every time.
It can also describe refusing advice you have already paid for. Speak to a qualified adviser, and then actually listen to what they say.
This week: open the thing you have not opened.
In health, reversed
Isolation affecting how you feel, and not being counted as a health factor because it does not look like one.
A reading is not therapy and is not a substitute for professional support. If you are struggling, speak to a qualified professional, and please do that before you speak to a tarot reader.
This week: tell one person the true answer when they ask how you are.
As someone’s feelings, reversed
Withdrawn to the point where you cannot tell what is there. Possibly a great deal, possibly nothing, and the withdrawal itself is now the message.
I would stop interpreting and ask directly. The card is unusually clear that guessing is not going to work here.
This week: ask one plain question rather than reading the silence.
Is the Hermit a yes or no card?
Upright, the Hermit reads as maybe, and specifically not until you have thought about it properly. It is not a refusal. It is a request for more information before the answer counts.
Reversed it moves to no, because the thinking has stopped and more time alone will not improve the decision.
For a single yes-or-no question you can pull one now with the free yes/no tarot reading, which is free and automated. With this card I would treat the maybe as the actual answer rather than an evasion.
How the Hermit differs from the High Priestess and the Hanged Man

Three cards about inner knowing, and separating them makes each far easier to read.
The Hermit went to find it. Active, chosen, with an end he controls, and he comes back down carrying something.
The High Priestess already knows it. Nothing to go and get. The knowing is present and the work is trusting it rather than seeking it.
The Hanged Man is stuck with it. No climbing and no answers yet. The insight arrives because he stopped moving, not because he went looking.
Put plainly: the Hermit searched, the High Priestess already holds it, the Hanged Man is waiting for it to surface.
Reading the Hermit with the cards around it
One card is a fragment. The cards beside it finish the sentence.
With Swords nearby, the solitude is mental and usually a decision being worked through carefully. With Cups, it is emotional and often a recovery period.
Next to Strength, the two agree, and I would take that as confirmation that patience is genuinely the right approach here rather than an excuse.
Next to Death, the withdrawal is happening because something ended, and the card is asking you to use the time rather than simply survive it.

- The staff: the Fool’s and the Magician’s staff, brought with him
- Snow and summit: he already climbed, this is the top
What should you do this week if you drew the Hermit?
Answer one question honestly and the rest of the card resolves itself.
What are you trying to work out, and when will you know you have worked it out?
If you can answer both, protect the time. Solitude with a question and an end date is one of the most productive things available to anyone, and it almost never gets scheduled.
If you cannot answer either, the card is telling you this is not the Hermit yet. It is just being alone, and being alone on its own does not produce anything.
On timing, I will be blunt, because plenty of sites will hand you a month. Timing is the weakest thing tarot does, and I would rather say so than invent a date for you.
Common questions about the Hermit
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Hermit mean I will be alone?
No. It describes solitude you choose for a stretch, not a forecast about your relationships. Tarot does not predict loneliness, and I would not let anyone read it to you that way.
Why is the Hermit standing on a mountain?
Because he has already climbed it. That detail contradicts how the card is usually described. He is not retreating into a cave. He is at the top, and the lamp is held out for whoever is still coming up.
What is inside the Hermit’s lantern?
A six-pointed star, not a flame. That is deliberate. A candle would make it a card about comfort in the dark. A star makes it a card about a light that does not flicker and cannot burn out.
Is the Hermit a yes or no card?
It reads as maybe, and specifically not until you have thought about it properly. Reversed it moves to no, because the solitude has stopped producing anything.
Which zodiac sign is the Hermit linked to?
Virgo, and its element is earth. Both suit a card about careful, unglamorous examination rather than sudden revelation.
